Athens Taxi Strike and Public Transport Walkout on October 1
Travelers heading to Greece’s capital should prepare for significant Athens travel disruptions on October 1, 2025, when both taxi drivers and segments of the public transport workforce will stage a 24-hour strike. The action, announced by the Athens Taxi Drivers’ Union (SATA), is expected to halt taxi service across Attica and disrupt normal operations in the city’s public transportation system.
Union president Thymios Lymberopoulos said the Athens taxi strike is a direct response to government policies that, in his view, favor private ride-hailing companies over licensed taxis. In a radio interview, he called the walkout “a new uprising” and urged mass participation, comparing it to major protests more than a decade ago.
With both taxis and public transit affected, tourists in Athens and residents alike are being warned to expect heavy traffic, delays, and overcrowding. Authorities have highlighted that travel to and from Athens International Airport and the Port of Piraeus may be severely impacted.
The Athens public transport strike adds to the pressure, leaving travelers with few alternatives. City officials are advising visitors to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and make use of any available services to navigate the capital during the shutdown.
