Athens will face significant disruptions in public transportation on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, as unions join a 24-hour strike called by the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE). Commuters and visitors should be aware of reduced operating hours across buses, trains, and urban rail systems.

Buses

City buses will run only between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m. Early morning and late evening service will be suspended, with normal operations expected to resume gradually after 10:00 a.m. The final departures are scheduled before 8:00 p.m. Routes operated by the Attica Transport Consortium are not expected to be affected.

Metro, ISAP, and trams

Urban rail services, including the metro, the ISAP electric railway, and the tram, will operate from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. After that time, trains will remain in depots for the rest of the day.

Trains and suburban rail

The Panhellenic Railway Federation has confirmed participation in the strike, which means intercity and regional trains, as well as the Proastiakos suburban network, will see widespread cancellations. Hellenic Train is expected to release further details.

The strike is part of a broader call for higher wages and stronger protections against rising living costs. With transportation operating only during limited windows, passengers are advised to adjust travel plans, allow extra time for essential trips, and consider alternative modes of transport such as taxis, rideshares, or bicycles.
