Looking for Something to Do in Artemida? Don’t Miss the Local Farmers' Market!

If you find yourself in Artemida on a Saturday morning wondering what to do, we’ve got something you simply can't miss, a way to experience the real rhythm of everyday Greece, no filters, no polished catalog shots.

Head over to the laiki, the local street market usually set up in Artemida along Ypapantis and Amfitritis streets.

🛑 Heads up: During the busy summer season, because of increased tourist traffic and space adjustments, the laiki temporarily moves to a different location:

  • From August 3, 2024, to January 31, 2025, the market will be held on Spetson and Themistokleous streets.

  • From February 6, 2025, to July 30, 2025, the laiki will operate only on Amfitritis street.

Laiki (λαϊκή αγορά) is a traditional Greek farmers' market, held once a week in almost every town across the country. It’s where locals shop for the freshest fruits, vegetables, fish, cheeses, olives, and homemade products straight from farmers and small producers.

When's the best time to go?

From early in the morning, these streets transform into a sea of colorful stalls, with the air buzzing with energy. Vendors call out and shout over one another:
"Tomatoes - 1 euro per kilo!", "Oranges - 80 cents!", "Nectarines half price!"
Their lively voices create a real, living soundtrack for your Saturday morning.
You'll smell fresh fish, herbs, ripe fruit, and feel the pulse of local life.

If you want the best selection of fresh produce, come early, between 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. That’s when the stalls are full, and everything is at its peak.

Looking for the best deals? Swing by around 2:00 p.m., when vendors are eager to clear out their goods before packing up. Prices can drop by half compared to morning rates and they’re still much cheaper than anything you’ll find at a supermarket.

What’s the deal with the little carts?

Here’s a tip: if you spot groups of grandmas and housewives pulling little shopping trolleys loaded with fruits and veggies, you can bet they’re just coming back from the laiki.

And don’t be fooled, those small trolleys can hold a week's worth of groceries for an entire Greek family!

 A few quick tips:

  • 💵 Bring cash - not all vendors accept cards.

  • 👜 Bring a big shopping bag - you’ll likely end up buying more than you planned.

  • 😎 Relax, wander, enjoy the chaos - that's the real Greek spirit!

Καλή όρεξη! (Bon appétit!)
