Athens Metro to Run All Night: First Test on July 5 - 6, 2025
Big news for night owls and partygoers in Athens: on the night of Saturday, July 5 to Sunday, July 6, 2025, the city will run a 24-hour public transportation pilot for the first time ever.
That means all three metro lines, the tram, and select bus routes will operate nonstop through the night - offering safe, reliable transit for locals and visitors alike.
Why 24-Hour Metro in Athens?
The goal of the trial is simple: to test how effective and well-received overnight public transport would be - especially during the summer months when the city stays alive well past midnight.
Greek Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kyranakis explained that the idea is to keep people safe, especially young people heading home from a night out.
“We need to send a clear message: our kids should be able to get home safely - without having to drive after drinking,” said Kyranakis in parliament.
Just One Night - For Now
This first run will last for just one night. But it’s not just symbolic - authorities will carefully review the results, including public feedback and system performance, to decide whether overnight metro service in Athens should become a regular thing.
There’s also an ongoing feasibility study that will weigh the cost, staffing needs, and maintenance logistics. If all goes well, the city may offer 24-hour service every Saturday or on selected dates throughout the year.
Who’s Behind It?
Kyranakis thanked the workers and unions at STASY, OSY, and OASA for backing the initiative and helping make it happen. It’s a team effort - and one that could reshape how Athenians move through their city.
